Getting from Arlanda to central Stockholm

The Arlanda Express

The fastest link between the airport and Stockholm Central, running frequently through the day and taking around twenty minutes. If you are travelling alone with a single bag and your destination is near the central station, it is genuinely difficult to beat and we will not pretend otherwise.

The catch is the same as with every airport rail link: it takes you to a station, not to where you are staying. If the second leg means a taxi with luggage, or a walk in February, the twenty minutes stops being the whole story.

Airport coaches

Coaches run between the terminals and Cityterminalen next to Stockholm Central, taking roughly forty-five minutes depending on traffic. Cheaper than the train, slower, and with the same limitation: it ends at a transport hub rather than at your address.

Reasonable if you are travelling light, unhurried, and staying centrally.

Taxi from the rank

Taxis are available outside every terminal. Sweden has no regulated taxi tariff — operators set their own prices and are required to display them — so the fare for the same journey can differ substantially between cars sitting in the same rank. Check the price sticker on the window before getting in, and be wary of anyone approaching you inside the terminal.

It gets you door to door, which is the real advantage over the train. What you do not get is a known price before you travel, or any certainty about who turns up.

A private chauffeur booked in advance

The case for booking a car ahead is not speed — the road journey takes about as long as it takes for anyone. It is that everything is settled before you land: the price is fixed, the chauffeur is assigned, and the pickup is tied to your flight number rather than to a time you guessed at when booking.

That matters most in the situations where the other options are worst. Landing at 23:40. Travelling with small children and car seats. Four people with winter luggage. Going somewhere the train does not, like Djursholm or a Sigtuna hotel. Arriving for a meeting where being uncertain is expensive.

It is the more expensive option per journey, and for a solo traveller with hand luggage heading to the central station it is usually the wrong one. We would rather say that here than have you find out afterwards.

What actually decides it

Count the people and the bags, then ask where the journey really ends. One person, one bag, ending at Stockholm Central: take the train. Two or more with luggage, or an address rather than a station: the comparison shifts, because every extra person adds a train fare but not a car.

Then ask what a bad outcome costs you. If arriving forty minutes late is merely annoying, take whatever is cheapest. If it means a missed meeting, a stressed child, or standing in the cold at midnight, buy the certainty.
