Stockholm cruise terminals, and how far each one is from the city
Stockholm does not have one cruise port. Ships dock at Frihamnen, Stadsgården, Skeppsbron, or — for the largest vessels — Nynäshamn, roughly 60 km south of the city. The difference matters more than most arrival guides admit: from Stadsgården you can walk into the Old Town in ten minutes, while from Nynäshamn the journey into Stockholm is an hour each way and shapes your entire day ashore.

Frihamnen
The main cruise quay, roughly 5 km north-east of the centre in the Värtahamnen area. Big enough for most large ships, and close enough that a transfer into town is a short drive rather than an expedition.
It is not, however, walkable to anything much. Plan on a transfer in both directions.
Stadsgården
On the Södermalm waterfront, directly across the water from the Old Town. The best berth in Stockholm from a passenger’s point of view: Gamla Stan is a walk away, and the view from the quay is the postcard.
If your ship docks here and you are able on foot, you may not need a car at all — which we would rather tell you than sell you one.
Skeppsbron
A quay on the eastern edge of Gamla Stan itself, used by smaller vessels and expedition ships. As central as it gets — you step off into the Old Town.
Nynäshamn
About 60 km south of Stockholm, used by ships too large for the inner-city berths. It is a proper harbour town, but it is not Stockholm, and every itinerary that lists "Stockholm" while docking here quietly costs you around two hours of travel.
This is the call that most needs planning. A commuter train runs to Stockholm Central and takes about an hour; a car takes roughly the same but goes where you are actually going, and can be waiting when you disembark rather than when the timetable allows.
If you have a fixed all-aboard time — and you do — the safety margin matters more here than anywhere else in the city.
Planning a day ashore
Work backwards from the all-aboard time, not forwards from arrival. Subtract the transfer back to the ship, then a buffer, then decide what fits in what is left. From Stadsgården that leaves most of a day; from Nynäshamn it can leave four or five hours.
For a port day, a car at disposal usually beats separate bookings. The vehicle stays with you between stops, so a museum that runs long or a lunch that stretches does not cost you a booking — and the driver, who knows the all-aboard deadline, is the person watching the clock.
